Buffet/Muncy Barrels

Made by Phil Muncy, of Muncy Winds, these barrels are a sensational new product.

Once I tried them, I immediately bought two, one for my Buffet R13 Bb and one for my older Selmer 10G A clarinet.

On both clarinets, I immediately noticed a deeper richer tone, more balanced intonation, and amazing response. This is due to the Phil Muncy’s Moennig style taper, painstakingly cut using a six reamer process.

I was so pleased, that I asked if I could represent these wonderful barrels on my website.

Sizes are 64-67 mm, available for both Bb and A clarinet. I have in stock mostly Bb 65 mm, as this is the most requested size in a replacement barrel.

Price - $150 plus shipping. Send me a payment by mail/check, PayPal, or call with a Credit Card number. I will send you one to try out.  No risk, 14 day trial, money cheerfully refunded if not satisfactory. If you want to try multiple barrels, make a payment for each.

This is a quote from the Muncy website:

This barrel has been more than 10 years in the making. Designed by Philip Muncy for Buffet Crampon in France, this barrel is hand finished and play tested by Philip Muncy. Each barrel is made from the most select unstained grenadilla woods. Every barrel features silver plated rings. This reversed taper bore was inspired by the late Hans Moennig and Anthony Gigliotti. Producing a beautiful ringing tone that is responsive and keeps its shape in every dynamic range. This barrel voices astonishingly well and is sure to please those that have enjoyed the best of the Moennig style barrels. Available in lengths 64-67mm for both A and Bb clarinets.

Buffet “Moennig” Clarinet Barrels

Many people desire a shorter barrel for tuning considerations. The Buffet Moennig barrel is an exellent choice.

The reverse cone taper adds to tone and projection while it reduces the 12th in the upper joint, keeping throat tones and upper clarion more closely in tune.

I stock 66 and 65 mm lengths only. Other lengths are a special order.

Price $150, plus shipping ($5 U.S. $10 International). Send me a payment and I will send you one to try out. No risk, 14 day trial, money cheerfully refunded if not satisfactory. If you want to try multiple barrels, make a payment for each.

Improve your tone AND your Intonation.

Customer quote: “I received the 65 (mm cocobolo barrel) today, and invited a few players over tonight for a jam session.  They love the sound.  I need to try a few more combinations of mouthpiece and clarinet to know how it can best be used, but this is another awesome piece of Grabnerness.”

***

My barrels are 1 mm thicker than the normal barrel. The additional material gives a tremendous compactness and density to the tone.

My hand-reamed, dual reverse taper bore gives warmth, projection, and improved twelfths. Due to the added thickness of the barrel, I feel that with adequate care, rings are not necessary. The absence of rings adds to the clarity of the tone produced. I give a two-year warranty against cracking.

In many cases, I have been able to noticeably improve the intonation of the clarinet. This is especially true for A clarinets, which so often have very flat throat tones and sharp clarion A, B, and C.

Please note – My barrel making shop is currently closed for retooling. I will probably not be making any barrels until winter.

Grabner Hand-Made barrels are made SPECIAL ORDER only, after consultation regarding your personal clarinets.

Please wait to order after we have discussed your specific requirements.

For best results, ship me your clarinet and I will hand-fit the barrel and tune it with your favorite mouthpiece.

I also make barrels for C clarinets, special order only.

If you require several barrels to try, consider the Buffet Moennig "Barrels" as described below. Or, the New Buffet Muncy Barrels

Above: Two Cocobolo barrels, Bb clarinet, 65 mm.

My barrels are available in two different materials:

Cocobolo - a tropical wood, long a favorite with musical instrument makers. It imparts a lovely smoothness and sweet darkness to the tone quality. It also has the ability to smooth out the differences in timbre between registers on the clarinet.

Cocobolo has long been difficult to get in fine instrument quality. I now have a source that supplies me wood of impeccable quality, well seasoned, and ready to go.  Price $200.00

Synthetic  - Perfect for those who live in humid climates, and those who play outdoor concerts where weather can make a difference. The material does NOT swell and distort like a wooden barrel, nor will it ever crack. I hand-ream the bore twice - to impart lively response and a surprisingly warm, dark tone, reminiscent of the best wood barrels.  This is NOT a molded product, and is made with the same care as the best wooden barrels. Price $240.00

Please specify whether for Bb or A clarinet and length 64.5, 65 or 66 mm. Typically an A barrel is 64.5 or 65 mm. I do ream the A barrels differently.
