Grabner HiTech Custom Barrels Bb/A

NOTICE:  Work on Custom Barrels will be suspended until mid April, for re-tooling. You may order now, but I will not be able to ship until after April 15.

Grabner HiTech custom barrels are now available, with a choice of materials and sizes.  All the materials are synthetics. These are used rather than wood  because there are so many problems with barrels made from wood: it swells, it shrinks, it changes shape, it cracks and it wears out faster than the rest of your clarinet. Synthetics can sound just as good, or better,  and you can avoid all these problems.

Grabner HiTech Custom Barrels are available in the following materials:

Custom Materials

Front row, left to right:

  • Marbled woodgrain rubber - this is made by a premier rubber manufacturer in Germany. AMong other things, it is used in many musical products, including clarinet mouthpieces and barrels. It is an excellent acoustic material with a warm tone that carries well.
  • Ruby acrylic -  I picked this material for its sheer beauty. It possesses a lovely tone, but is more suited to the recital hall than the big concert hall.
  • White Delrin - Delrin is also an excellent acoustic material. It creates a tone which is very warm but has a nice "ping" to it. I have to admit that the white delrin barrel is my favorite. While it is full bodied in tone, response is almost silky - everything seems so easy and flowing - a real asset in legato playing.
  • Black rod rubber - This material probably produces the best tone quality, which I describe as rich and warm, with lots of "ping" and projection. This rubber also comes from Germany. It is an excellent acoustic material.

Back row, left to right:

  • PA 12 Nylon - This new material produces a tone that is warm, full, never too bright. It provides plenty of projection. This barrel is 3D printed. In the final testing, it is hand reamed.
  • Black Delrin - Another personal favorite with plenty of bounce in the sound. Full, rich, lively!
  • Black rod rubber (1920) -  Another product from my supplier in Germany. It is a very soft, deep, dark, dense rubber and makes a wonderful mouthpiece or barrel. Material is consistent with materials used in the 1920s to 1940s.

These barrels are available in sizes 66, 65.5, 65, 64.5, and 64 mm. All are cut on a CNC machine (except the PA 12 Nylon, which is 3D printed).

I use a modified Hans Moennig reverse taper, begining at approx .585 in.

Grabner Barrels

For quite a few years, I made barrels on my lathe, in cocobolo, delrin, and African blackwood. They were in very hot demand. It got so there was quite a waiting list. Sadly, allergies made it impossible for me to continue making the barrels by hand.

Flash forward eight years. The Grabner barrel is now available, with an even higher level of quality, manufactured by CNC technology, but still hand reamed and play tested. The attributes of the Grabner barrels include:

  • Specifically designed to complement and enhance the performance of Grabner mouthpieces
  • Specifically designed for Buffet R13 bore clarinets (R13, Prestige, Festival, Tosca)
  • Usuable on both Bb and A clarinets
  • Made from beautiful, aged African Blackwood
  • Ringless for best tone and response
  • Superb clarity in throat tones
  • Modified Moennig style reverse cone taper for improved tuning
  • Available in 64, 65, 66, and 67 mm lengths
  • Highest possible quality and consistency
  • One year warranty on cracking
  • Fits in your case.
